Triple Laughs Guaranteed
world’s smallest comedy fest 3
Just when you're starting to jones for more laughs, the World's Smallest Comedy Night crew are swooping in to save the day with The World's Smallest Comedy Festival! As they embark on their third edition, it's clear this is becoming a staple on the comedy scene. All the local laugh-masters you love are booked and ready to go. And this year local producers will be joining the party with special editions of their weekly and monthly shows that you love year-round. You can literally catch a whole city's worth of laughs at one venue. It's Hurley's…and they have great food, coffee, and booze, so might as well buy a ticket to every show, and set up camp for the week.
I caught up with Troy Stark and Vance Michel to get the scoop on what to expect this time around. First up though, I had to know why they started a festival in the first place.
“Basically, we wanted to secretly take over this bar, one room at a time, and [a festival] was a good way to do it. We've been slowly trying to eat and eat more of this bar and make it our own,” Troy told me. “No, that's a lie. We wanted to create opportunities for local comics. There was a time when Just For Laughs was in question, and all that stuff, so last year was an important year to really push for doing something big for the people that work all year to have something to showcase for so. It felt right to keep that tradition going, and try to do some new fun things with the creators that we like working with all year round.”
While previous editions saw the team producing as many comedy shows as they could within the timeframe, this year's focus is on creativity, innovation, and raising the profile of great local producers.
“[We're] working with people like Tyler Lemko and his Creative Club, which is a really cool new thing -- art and comedy at the same time. Like, you paint your self-portrait, and get a comedy show. Or Shosho and her Crochet Comedy Club. Or the Poly Mic: it's one of the best shows in the city, and so we asked them what they wanted to do, and they said help us run a game show. So, now, we're doing a Poly Mic game show called Are You Gay? It's gonna be wild. These are things that we don't get to do all the time, and we don't necessarily get to work with other people as much as we'd like to, but now we do, so we're giving ourselves a chance to work with the people we like, and shout out the people we like working with.”
Vance Michel told me that this year will be hot. “We're bringing more fire to the festivities. It's unique. This will be one of the best festivals showcasing Montreal's local independent comedy scene. We're focusing on the funny that's in Montreal.”
While Vance is on his share of shows including hosting duties, The Blackout Show is his curation. “It's the most blackish show ever happening in Montreal. The lineup is straight up melanin. We've got the best African descendents on this show.”
World's Smallest Comedy Festival is 8 days, and at least 15 shows. Both previous years featured last minute announcements, as well as spontaneous shows happening on the spot when there are enough audience members, comedians, and good vibes.
World's Smallest Comedy Showcase is the flagship show that started it all.
