A lot of my philosophical leanings are mutable. Some thoughts have gone through phases, one belief system replaced by the next, and some change day by day. Reincarnation? Maybe; depends if we're talking faith or scientific odds, framing or facts. Even facts get tricky though, because there are exceptions to every rule and inexplicable things happen every day. (My favorite modern case of possible reincarnation is that of James Leininger, who at two years old started to have nightmares about a plane crash. He provided names of aircrafts, locations, and the names of those on the plane with him when he was shot down in war.)
The eternal struggle between Good and Evil? Well, is that a struggle, or a cycle? Is there actually Good and Evil, or is the whole thing a ball of neutral chaos on a spectrum? Maybe we created Evil the same way we created the Devil: because we were unable to see that if God is everything, he's death and suffering, and all forms of change and transformation too.
Is God real? I prefer to live as though God is. I perceive God as too big a concept for us silly humans, and too big to be contained by any single book. As a result, we created stories and images that capture only a particle of the Bigness, leaving us blind folks to dispute which part is real when if anything, it's all the perceptions combined, plus more we can't even grasp. On the other hand, I have a working theory that we are in fact the microbiome of a bigger creature. This is, frankly, as solid a theory as any of the other myriad possibilities as we grasp at straws for answers we are incapable of discovering.
When someone dear to me was recently lamenting a tragic loss, and how it had changed the trajectory of those close to it, I interjected before thinking, and said that it had happened as it was supposed to.
“It wasn't supposed to happen,” he said.
“But it did happen,” I countered. “So, it was supposed to.”
Now, before we get into the theory of predeterminism, allow me, with humility, to offer an excuse for my mouth. There's a phenomenon called Confabulation, driven by what neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga dubbed "The Left-Brain Interpreter.” There are fascinating examples of this, but the short answer is, the brain prefers coherence over truth whenever the truth doesn't make sense, or when we simply don't have the whole story. If you've ever caught yourself trying to explain something before you even have a grasp on the “why”, you've seen this in action. In the late 1970’s, Gazzaniga along with Joseph LeDoux performed the "Chicken Claw and Snow Scene" study, where they showed two different images to each side of a patient's brain. Each hemisphere got half the story, so to speak. One side was told to stand up, and the patient did. When asked why they stood, they didn't say I don't know, they said they were thirsty, and going to get a drink. The patient created a coherent story, proving that's what the left hemisphere of our brain does as a matter of course. (I'm of course not doing it justice here, because what the hell do I know; this is the super dumbed down version.)
Predeterminism is a really great explanation for things; things we don't understand, things we don't like, and even joyful, seemingly improbable things. When we run into an old dear friend somewhere completely random, it can feel fated. When you search for love and finally find it, it makes sense of the weird journey it took to get there. Same with success; getting the gig of your dreams feels destined once you’re there, sorting all the time, effort, and sleepless nights wondering if you should give up and join the corporate circus into a plot arc, giving it all meaning.
But applied to the future, predeterminism loses its lustre. Sure, it conjures strands of Que Sera, Sera, and reminds us that the future will sort itself as needed, but it also steals our control. If it's all fate, then why try? Just sit and wait. As anyone inclined to sit and wait can tell you in hindsight, nothing happens when you choose that path. Which makes sense, as you've removed the necessary ingredient of action. See, if fate does exist, I believe it meets us where we are. It takes into account what path we're journeying on, and tosses us clues that we're not alone, instead travelling with a cosmic force alongside us, whispering to keep going, even when the odds look dismal. Fate is the force that provides for unlikely shortcuts, connections, and bonuses as we’re making our way to our goals. But you have to be already consistently en route to encounter any of those.
I don't know where I got this concept (probably a meme), but there's a framing technique that says to act like the past was fate, while the present and future are within your control. For the record, Gemini couldn't exactly source this either, except to point out similar frameworks in Stoicism. I love this point of view because I'm a fan of concentrating on the cards you have in hand; maybe you chose them, maybe you didn't, but these are the cards in your hand, and you must play from here. And to believe that everything happened on purpose to get you to exactly here so you can play these cards to reach your highest self -- well, that’s beautiful, and empowering. It gives everything coherence while allowing for countless possibilities about what lies ahead.
It's fair to say that I should try to bite my tongue for at least a pause before my left “Because Brain” starts trying to justify the tragedies of others. (I felt pretty insensitive for slapping what sounds like simplification over the heart wound of another as if a bandaid could heal a gaping hole.) It's also fair to say that as philosophies go, this is one of my favorites, and you, Dear Reader, would be wise to take it for at least a test drive.
Imagine that everything -- everything -- you've encountered to this point has been a carefully crafted story; the intricacies and the idiosyncrasies, the highs and the lows. Everything has done its all to bring you to the here and now. And now, the book is Choose Your Own Adventure, and instead of just a couple of mediocre options, you have infinite choices on how to proceed, and where you can reach. Imagine that you are the star of a plotline that couldn't exist without you; couldn't exist without even the parts of yourself that make you uncomfortable. Now consider the incredible way your character has navigated these tribulations and joys; the way they have fortified you, fed you, taught you, built you into the You that stares back from the mirror today. From here, Dear Reader, you get to plot your next steps; start the next chapter, choose your new destination, become someone entirely new. What will you do?
The world is holding its breath, waiting on the glory and impact of your next move, and personally, I can't wait to see it.
